i found myself in campsie the other day, gaping at a shop across the main road. it was called “cake world” but somehow i managed to not go inside. sure, i eventually crossed the road and stood for some time looking through the front windows at a bizarre selection of theme cakes, including a couple that could fit the category “mmm… erotic cakes…”… but i did not actually go inside.
because already i had a banh mi pork roll in my bag — five kinds of pork by-products in the one sandwich! — and the enticing delight you see here: red bean ice sandwich. like those japanese fish-shaped red bean pancakes, except this one was korean fish-shaped wafers filled with vanilla ice cream and red bean syrup. wondrous!
the pork roll i ate sitting on the train platform. the fish ice cream sandwich was slurped up on the train, whizzing through the inner west back towards the city.

I had some vietnamese baguettes from a famous shop, Mr. Baguette, when I was down in Souther California for my sister’s graduation last weekend.
The bread was so good, I seriously am tempted to start making my own bread…
Crispy on the outside, squishy on the inside, not too thick or thin, and no more than ten minutes from the oven.
It’s a shame the pate was so sparse — i doubt much more than a teaspoon full, over then length of the ~20cm. sandwich.
Do you know a good baguette recipe perchance? ^_^
ooohh. which banh mi bakery did you go to? the one next to a chemist, near a st george teller? they are pretty good – and they pile on the fillings don’t they?
i am thinking I need to go to campsie if only to see what these erotic cakes look like. i know the shop, but i dont know if i should…
hikaru-san: aahhh! mr baguette! that’s so cool. thanks for the link. i love that chrome american diner look, with everyone behind the counter asian. but why would you be tempted to make your own when you could just go to mr baguette? (so you could slather on as much pate as you desire! 🙂 ) sadly i have no recipe for you.
saffron: ah! you are a campsie regular? it was my first time there, quite a wonderland of groceries and noodle/dimsum shops. the banh mi bakery i went to… i’m not sure which one it was, but at the entrance there’s a man and a machine making little “creamy cakes”. oh how i wanted one!
i took a photo (on film!) of the erotic cake, so perhaps it will make an appearance on the site when i finally finish the roll.
Yes Yes a campsie once a week regular 🙂
I haven’t had a chance to check out the erotic cakes, maybe this weekend.
Hmmmm… I am not sure if we are taking about the same Vietnamese backery. At one stage the dude behind the counter was serving sugar cane juice and the thick sweet coffee – Vietnamese style.
Will you also submit this post, or different one to the Omnivoribus Australis thingie? I like this one, if only for the fish icecream sandwich!
Also, I am thinking someone is going to google the word erotic… and what a suprise it will be when he or she finds cake!
hmm. i was thinking about the omnivoribus australis thing, and how it would be hard for me to submit a particular post, because my blogging application is not so advanced as to offer links to individual posts. i guess i’d have to anchor something, but i’ve forgotten how and also i’ve packed away my html books.
besides, i think i like the post from may 30 (lucky thai sweets and video). 🙂 perhaps june 1 (lindt cafe). but if you much prefer the ice cream fish, and don’t mind the lack of direct linkage, i would be happy to submit this one.
Ooh… what a selection. Howsabout I just point everyone towards yours blog and say read read…
i’m newly arrived in sydney-as a study abroad student-the passionflower place intrigues me. where is it? so that i can fulfill my international search for the bestest ice cream ever 😀
