bloody hell i’ve been whingy of late. but look. here, bringing cheer, is an amazing smiling flower biscuit, which came out of a packet that nellie brought me a few months ago. that these biscuits came from nellie is noteworthy, because she generally leaves a trail of smiling flowers wherever she goes.

you see? … … …

however. after i got extremely excited at the sight of amazing smiling biscuits falling out of the packet, it was pointed out to me that in fact the smiley face was just a U with an umlaut over it. i guess it made sense. &#252lker is a turkish company who make, amongst other tasty treats, a damn fine banana wafer and an even finer pistachio chocolate bar. they sure added a sugary sparkle to those dusty days in turkey all those years (three) ago. [sigh]

despite the fact that amazing smiley biscuit is now just a routine branding exercise, i still feel a bit regretful every time i bite into one; it’s hard to eat something with such a happy disposition. they just keep smiling though, the little troopers!

the mother’s last supper before winging it back to singapore tomorrow. i feel like i’ve been eating all day, since leftover rhubarb-strawberry-pear-apple crumble with 56% minimum fat cream at eight this morning.

the sister has a week before heading back to new york and there are still many many meals out there left to conquer. “if we live like hobbits for the next week, we’ll be able to fit it all in,” she says. this does not mean we will neglect our foot hygiene, only that we should have three meals before noon. of course.

the setting: the gaelic club, where the floor is always sticky. an extremely self-conscious “band” called the kills is artfully jerking itself about on stage. they are tiresome to begin with and then quickly yet gradually improve and then possibly become tiresome again. i lose track. there are many many studded belts in the room, the most i’ve seen gathered in a single location, except for the accessories rack at sportsgirl.

but we are really here to see hot hot heat. there are many enthusiastic girls up front, one group with ziggy stardust haircuts and sharp tailoring and another in netting and stripy knits. nellie has learnt all the lyrics by heart and is ready to go woo as required. hot hot heat play like a cartoon band, with struttin’ and tight jeans and sweat exploding out of hair like a fireworks display, and as nellie says, all the members look like duckie. which is untrue because there is the bass player who has a rockstar thing going and manages to keep his big north american rock hair perfectly bouffant through the night (where “night” is an efficient forty-five minute set).

who doesn’t like bass players?

Holey satisfying

According to an ad from the dairy board which pops up on teev every few years, a donut is about 20% fat. From this I deduced that if you ate five donuts in one sitting, it was like eating one donut that was composed entirely of fat.

Wobbly, yum.

Of course, even though I thought about this fact whenever I felt like a deep fried snacky cake, it rarely held me back.

One of my favourite donut experiences was several years ago when I visited my sister in Evanston, a university town near Chicago. We walked a half hour to get to a supermarket in search of some tasty treats. There was a Krispy Kreme stand in a clearing in the aisles, and nestled in some waxy paper was a sour cream donut. It’s not like it sounds. It wasn’t just a slather of sour cream sandwiched in a donut. The sour cream had been mixed into the batter before frying and sugar glazing, resulting in a sweet and tangy thing indeed.

I’ve held this memory in my head ever since, and a trip to Krispy Kreme has been mandatory the last two times I was back in the USA (u s a). The first time, they were out of sour cream donuts. The second time, this past May, it just wasn’t as good as I remember. Maybe it was because I had already had about four donuts already in that trip, and subconsciously I was seeing myself eating this fistful of fat. That’s nostalgia for ya.

Still, the news that Krispy Kreme will land its franchise in Sydney next year (sniffing the trail left by Starbucks, obviously) made me twitch momentarily in excitement and I briefly saw myself as that geeky teenage service industry guy in the Simpsons. That’s nostalgia for ya.

16 bit GIFs make us dithered idiots.

In April, that maybe even makes us April fools.

Nonetheless, we packy a punch.

See, when you spend several weeks in Singapore, with your sister whom you haven’t seen for a year and a bit, and there are those picture booths, booths that might put you in an ad for strawberry chocolate covered pretzels, or superimpose your heads on a selection of deserts and spew them out as tiny stickers, things are bound to get a little out of hand.

There will be non stop maniacal laughter. There will be the invention of many new catchphrases. There may even be a selection of deserts and chocolate covered pretzels.

And the thing is, it will be so *SO* much fun, that it will happen all over again, in New York.

I thought that this year, after last year’s noise fest, that I would get heaps of everything I wanted to do last year but couldn’t find time for, done. Drawing, comics, painting my room, baking cakes… Instead I find myself traipsing around other countries that are full of distractions and amusing photo opportunities. I guess the thing with all this fun, is that time will fly, soon I will be back and good folk out there will be giving me money to draw pictures for them. ‘k?

Could it be this good? It’s gonna be wonderful.

Welcome to the first ever Guest Scribble.

Nellie made this one while she was a-visiting, to describe her coffee machine without using a lot of funny arm movements. (Then I made a mockery of it by drawing the little burdie. The word “bird” will never be the same after that last eels album.)

Big American coffee franchises have been plundering the recreational coffee scene here. Having only recently become a coffee drinker, I suspect I may be unqualified to judge the basic product on offer, though I do appreciate the novelty fun variety: the ice-crushed, chocolate-addled, sprinkle-topped specimen. Only 18 more to go on my frequent drinkers card until I get a free one!

Is it unsophisticated to order a mocha? Is it utterly cosmopolitan to request a macchiato? These caffeine quandries can be avoided by seeking out the most ludicrous frozen coffee beverage. Oreo crumbs? Yes please. Fake cherry flavour? Sure! Aerosol whipped cream? Well, duh! It’s on the photo innit?

See, even when yer boyfriend, who you quite like, suddenly picks up and goes on a 6 month epic Indiana Jones journey to exciting bomb-riddled sub-emailable countries like India and Pakistan and Iran and beyond, there’s half a packet of fun, bite-sized reasons why you should be pleased:

1. Nellie’s coming!!  Finally.

2. The new Eels album.  It’s so pretty and lo-fi.

3. Pale green peppermint ice-cream studded through with mini m&ms.  Sure, it’s got that non-creamy, skim milk texture… but it shore is funny though.

4. Orange fur-covered bookshelf.  It’s orange. It’s furry. You don’t even need books.

5. That scab on your knee from when you fell over unassisted in the street has grown crusty and ripe for the picking.  Meanwhile the tiny cut you got while hoicking yourself out of the swimming pool, has become mildly infected – not helped at all by the fact that your big metal watch keeps chafing. You’d think it would have taken a far shorter time to arrive at the idea to switch wrists. But, no. Really.

And so on. And so forth.

This bout of merriment is brought to you today by 2 chocolate chickens and a stock cube, packed to the gills (genetically modified chicken) with tasty msg goodness.

Well, yes. Easter is still months away, but already at the local Coles, there are aisles packed to the gills (genetically modified shelves) with a whole new range of egg-shaped, strawberry-crackle-filled, flour-thickened compound chocolate.

Anyway, with my impeccable track record of failing to consistantly maintain this, my pride and joy (and this, my irony)… I figure that this page, freshly laid now, will keep long past its Easter use-by date. (Much like the heavily discounted, limited edition numbered, collector’s editioned box of Twinkies 2000 that NellieSterrah mailed me. The useby on the box was January 07… so I couldn’t work out if that meant the 7th of January 2000, or January 2007, because you can really taste the humectant in those tasty little critters. Mmm… humect-tant)

And so the moral of the story is… actually, there is no moral. And if you really think about it, there isn’t much of a story either. Hopefully, little one, you have not read this far in the hope of discovering some blinding universal truth. For as I near the end of this missive, I see no moments of clarity to be had. By me.

You know they put flour in cheap chocolate right?

It’s gonna be wonderful.

Oh yeah. There’s some new drawings and stuff in here. Still sort of unemployed, but I believe the more acceptable term is “freelancing”. Alla youse who wanna throw jobs my way, I’m away all of February 2000, but I’ll be back, scrubbed fresh and shiny in March.

Oh hey! Howyagoin’?

Come on in. And excuse the mess. Yeah, it’s lookin’ pretty much the same – been kinda busy the last few weeks, getting back into work after that last vacation. Y’know…

Oh I went to Chicago to see my sister graduate. Yeah [haha] any excuse. Um and we found a cheap airfare on the ‘net so we made a little post-Grunge pilgrimage to Seattle. No, it was really good. All sunny and clean-smelling. But y’know what? That weekend Eddie Vedder was playing the Tibetan Freedom Concert in Chicago – actually, Wisconsin – so I kinda missed out on a random Vedder sighting.

Yeah, dem’s the breaks.

Um look, I’m still in the middle of tidying up a few bits of work, so d’ya just wanna hang out here for a while? I’ll have something to show you real soon. Oh and there’s some milk and chocolate cookies over there… yeah I made them. No, really! [haha] Just avoid the black ones ok?
